Josue Álvaro-Borrego was born in Mazatlán, Sinaloa Mexico, in 1957. He received a Physical Oceanography degree from the Faculty of Marine Sciences in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, in 1980. He received the MSc. and PhD degrees in Optics from Cicese, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, in 1983 and 1993 respectively. He realized a sabbatical year in Scripps La Joya in 1994 in collaboration with Professor Charles Cox. Since 1986, Josuá has been with the Applied Physics Division, Optics Department in Cicese. At present, he is a Titular Researcher in the Optics Department. He is a Professor. He obtained the second Prize in Oceanography in Mexico in 1994. Since 1986, He has been a member of the Mexican Academy of Optics, and National Research System (SNI), and since 1998 he has been a member of the Mexican Science Academy. Josuá is a reviewer of several scientific journals. His research interests are pattern recognition and image processing with applications to biogenic particles and image processing of the sea surface. He is the author of several scientific papers and presentations at scientific conferences. In 2010, he obtained a BioScienceWorld 2010 Prize (Best Paper Award) from the IEEE Computer Society. He was a member of the Scor Group WG130 called Automatic Visual Plankton Identification, (2007-2010). Josuá was Head of the Optics Department in Cicese from November 1989 to June 1992. Josuá is a Co-Editor of the Book: Introducción a la identificación automática de organismos y estructuras microscópicas y macroscópicas.
