Biography

Professor Dr. Subhendu Sekhar Bag was born December 1, 1975 and raised at Tikarpara, Baricha in the district of Bankura of West Bengal by his parents Guiram Bag and Gangarani Bag. He married Aditi Datta (Bag) on August 9, 2006. Now he is a father of SREYASHI (Daughter) and Saswata (Son). After receiving a B.Sc. degree with first class 5th from Saldiha College at the University of Burdwan in 1995, he carried out master studies at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. After completion of his master study with first class first under the supervision of Prof. J. K. Ray, he carried out his doctoral study at the same institution under the supervision of Prof. Amit Basak in 2005. After 3 years of Post Doctoral Research work at Nihon University, College of Engineering, Koriyama, Fukushima, Japan under the supervision of Prof. Isao Saito he joined the department of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati, as an Assistant Professor in August 2008. He is now working as a Full Professor since 2017 and is continuing to explore Chemical Genomics, Chemical Biology, Bio-organic Chemistry of unnatural Nucleic acids/Peptides, and b-Lactam Antibiotics, especialy small biological pharmacophors. I have made fundamental contributions in the fields of Biooganic Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Working toward “Expanding the Genetic Alphabet”, I have uncovered the “Charge Transfer (CT) Complexation” as a strong enough force to stabilize a DNA duplex via the design of triazolyl donor-acceptor base pair(s) using “Click Chemistry” which could efficiently be replicated. “Just Mix & Read Strategy” in DNA or DNA lesions detection toward the goal of “Personalised Medicine” and Front Cover Page work on H45 G-Quadruplex are my other representative fundamentals in the allied field. “Toward Expanding the Genetic Code” and “Peptidomimetics” I have also fundamentally contributed to include conceptual sets of widely applicable unnatural amino acids and unique triazolyl-/uracil amino acid scaffolds. Out of many other untiring inventions, “Dual Door Entry! to exciplex/excimer formation,” “Click Reagent Version of Sonogashira Coupling” and “Suppressed β-silicon effect in Antiaromatic β-lactam” are three representative fundamentals by me. Translating a developed Expanded Genetic Alphabet to an Expanded Genetic Code toward a semi-synthetic life organism is my ultimate goal. Recently, I have started contributing fundamental research in fluorescent β-lactam, Photocatalytic Organic Reactions and in enediyne based DNA/peptides which will also play an important role in the field of globally emerging area of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. My fundamental contributions will have potential impact to the strengthening of basic health research not only in the country but also to the world scenario and thus, all Human Civilization will be benefited worldwide.
